  • June 5, 1997 I was a guest at the Speaker’s (of the House of Commons) House in Parliament for the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan (June 5, 1997). I met some amazing people, among the scholars and other guests, such as Lady Margaret Thatcher and Barroness Symons of Vernham Dean (Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs). These pictures were taken in the royal bedroom of the speaker’s house, where the monarchs of Britain would sleep the day before the Opening of Parliament (up to the second World War).
  • March 31, 1997 Klaus-Peter Schroeder (postdoc) and I took some pictures of comet Hale Bopp on March 31, 1997 about 5 miles SW of Cambridge. This 5 minute exposure shows the blue ion tail and the white dust tail (f/2, 100mm lens, 400 speed film). The red colour is sadly sodium glow in our night skies here.
